International & Brazilian Headlines
Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s news
podcast.
Here are the main headlines from Brazil and around the world.
We begin with
politics.
Brazilian
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former U.S. President Donald Trump held
a phone conversation lasting more than fifty minutes. According to sources, the
call focused on international relations and global economic issues.
Speaking of the
economy, gold prices have hit another record on the international market,
reflecting ongoing global uncertainty. At the same time, the U.S. dollar has
fallen to its lowest level in almost two years, losing strength worldwide.
In Brazil,
Petrobras announced a reduction in gasoline prices for distributors, a move
that could ease pressure on consumers. However, Brazil’s external accounts
deficit has reached its highest level in eleven years, raising concerns among
economists.
The Central
Bank of Brazil has kept interest rates at fifteen percent for the fifth
consecutive time, but officials signaled that rate cuts may begin as early as
March. In the United States, despite pressure from Donald Trump, the Federal
Reserve has decided to pause the pace of interest rate cuts.
Now turning to
international affairs.
Israel has
recovered the body of the last hostage held by Hamas, marking a significant and
emotional moment in the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, the European Union and
India have joined forces in a major trade agreement that could impact up to two
billion consumers worldwide.
In the United
States, a historic snowstorm has caused widespread disruption, leaving more
than twenty people dead.
Back in Brazil,
heavy rains in São Paulo have left sixty thousand residents without electricity
once again, highlighting ongoing infrastructure challenges during extreme
weather.
In health news,
Brazil’s regulatory agency Anvisa has expanded access to medicinal cannabis, a
decision welcomed by patients and health professionals.
In legal news,
Justice Minister Dias Toffoli spoke publicly about the Banco Master case. He
acknowledged the possibility of sending the case back to the first instance and
stated that a final decision will be made after further investigations. He also
lifted the confidentiality of videos containing testimonies given to the
Federal Police, revealing conflicting statements about financial portfolios
sold to banks in Brasília.
In sports,
midfielder Lucas Paquetá has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the most
expensive signing in the history of Brazilian football.
Looking beyond
our planet, astronomers have discovered an Earth-sized planet that may be
habitable. It has a complicated name and is located 146 light-years away —
which, astronomically speaking, is practically next door.
In the United
States, the so-called Minneapolis case has sparked nationwide protests against
Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Demonstrations have taken place in cities
such as Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Musician Bruce
Springsteen traveled to Minneapolis, where nurse Alex was killed by agents,
paying tribute and expressing solidarity with the community.
Finally, in
arts and culture, Brazil received four nominations from the British Academy of
Film and Television Arts, with two nominations going to The Secret Agent.
And we close
with a sad note.
