Since mid-2023, the Amazon basin has been hit by an exceptional drought due to low precipitation and persistently high temperatures throughout 2023. Scientists have discovered that the responsibility goes far beyond the climate phenomenon El Niño…

Israeli Parliament invaded by family members of Hamas hostages

Family members of hostages from the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas, still detained in the Gaza Strip, invaded last Monday morning (22) a session of the finance committee of the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, to demand urgent action for the release of their relatives kidnapped more than three months ago.

The invasion is part of the protest that has been taking place since last night near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem.

The group criticizes the Israeli leader for his lack of action to bring the hostages home "before it is too late."

Israeli authorities removed the protesters from the commission and suspended work in Parliament.

The protest comes on the day that Israeli troops gradually advance westward into Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, and towards Rafah.

According to military radio, the Israeli Army has surrounded the Nasser hospital and is completing the isolation of the city center. The military also arrived at al-Aqsa University and is one kilometer from the Moassi humanitarian zone, close to the sea, where thousands of displaced people are located.

The Red Crescent's central building in Khan Yunis was also besieged, and the Israeli military effectively paralyzed all its activities. Tanks have surrounded the building and snipers are positioned on the roofs of nearby buildings.

Information released by the Gaza Ministry of Health revealed that at least 25,295 people have lost their lives in the region since the conflict began on October 7.

Earlier, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrel, questioned "when there will be many deaths in Gaza" and announced that the situation in the region will be discussed in the EU Council with the bloc's foreign ministers.

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza could not be worse, there is no food, medicine and people are under bombs. Some ministers accept that there are many civilian casualties, but when is enough?" asked Borrell, emphasizing that this "is not the way to conduct a military operation."

For him, "from now on we must talk about a two-state solution and not a peace process." "I know Israel doesn't agree, but it is unacceptable, as the UN Secretary-General said. So we need to discuss. What is the solution? Expel people from Gaza? Kill them all? Israel has been inciting hatred for generations" , he highlighted.

An American state that failed to administer a lethal injection to a convict

 According to Jornal Nacional, Kenneth Smith, sentenced to death in 1989, survived the first execution attempt in November 2022, and the method chosen has now provoked reactions from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The US state of Alabama, along with Oklahoma and Mississippi, are the only states in the United States that authorize the execution of criminals by nitrogen hypoxia. The method chosen now to execute Kenneth Smith is the first execution in the United States by nitrogen asphyxiation. A mask will be placed on Kenneth Smith and for 15 minutes there will be a flow of nitrogen gas. Alabama authorities argue the process is painless and will cause him to quickly lose consciousness. However, experts say that wearing a mask could allow oxygen to enter and prolong the process, and that Smith will be the subject of an unproven experiment that could cause suffering . The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says the method would violate an international treaty against torture.

The text also says that Ukrainian intelligence does not have reliable information about who was on board the Russian plane. The note does not deny that the plane may have been shot down by a missile from Ukrainian forces.

United Nations Court does not call for ceasefire in the war against Hamas

The International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent acts of genocide from being committed against Palestinians in Gaza, but did not call for a ceasefire in the conflict.

The main judicial body of the United Nations released this Friday (26) the decision on a request presented by South Africa in December 2023. These are emergency measures related to Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Court of The Hague, in the Netherlands, ruled that:

Israel must prevent acts of genocide from being committed;

ensure that Israeli forces do not commit such acts;

prevent or punish public incitement of Palestinian genocide in the Gaza Strip;

enable the delivery of basic services and humanitarian assistance in the territory;

preserve evidence of alleged acts of genocide; and send, within a period of up to one month, a report proving that it has adopted the determined measures.

The Court did not call for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza, which was another demand from South Africa. The judges stated that the body has jurisdiction to judge the case and denied Israel's request for it to be dismissed.

The South African government accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, violating the 1948 United Nations international convention. The two countries signed the document that defines the crime as "acts with the intention of destroying in whole or in part a national, ethnic group , racial or religious". This decision should take years to be judged, according to experts.

Although this Friday's (26) decisions by the International Court of Justice are mandatory, they are difficult to implement because they need to be approved by the UN Security Council, where the United States, Israel's allies, has veto power.

South Africa said the decision was a decisive victory for the rule of law and international law, and said it expected Israel to comply.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said the decision was an important reminder that no country is above the law.

Israel's Prime Minister stated that the country will continue to defend itself following international law and that the war is against Hamas terrorists, not against Palestinian civilians.

Outside the Court, there were demonstrations on both sides.
